How Can We Overcome Depression?

Depression is first of all defined as a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of loneliness, sadness, loss of interest, etc.,

Most of the common symptoms of it are noticeable because it can be observed and seen by the behavior of the person having it, and the most common symptoms are:

-Loss of interest in even pleasurable or funny activities.

-Having issues about sleeping.

-Countenance is always sad.

-easily get angry and irritable.

-Has trouble in focusing or in concentration.

-Always aloft from friends or colleagues.

-Always anxious and sharing negative thoughts to others or colleagues.

-delirium or having difficulty in communication, especially finding the right words to say.

-Having a mood swings, wants to be isolated, no vigor or energy, etc.,

 

But there are situations that people have never shown any symptoms but because of a sudden incident, like death of loved ones, loss of a job, ending a relationship are some experiences which are really very difficult to endure.

To feel sad or grief is just a normal feeling to be felt by someone who experiences such situations.

But to be sad or depressed are not the same, because it’s just a normal reaction for people who loss their loved ones, loss their jobs, relationships with lovers are ended, they naturally feel extreme sadness but not to the point of being depressed.

Everyone of course would feel sad with those situations, but few people can’t handle them and they are the ones whom we call the depressed, because they are thinking that it’s already the end of their world and there is no more happiness a head of them as they thought.

Therefore, it’s good for us to stay hopeful no matter what happens, we have to find some inspirations other than what we thought the only one, because if you stick only to it, then if you lose them you will lose everything.

So it is so nice to feel and to imagine, that even without them we became nothing, but with God we can still have everything.

How to overcome depression and anxiety when it comes to biblical ways?

People who truly believe in God can feel sadness but they are never depressed, specially the Christians who are the faithful servants of God will never suffer this sickness, because by faith all depressions and anxieties are being relieved and of course can all be overcome in life.

As the bible is giving this inspirational verse of the:

Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The story of the rich man and Lazarus is one of the best examples about a person that deserves to be depressed, because Lazarus is a beggar, he has nothing, no home of his own, no money, he got sores in his body,

in other words all sorts of hardships are in him, all sorts of anxieties were with him but he was never depressed because of his faith that there is God who will comfort him with all his hardships.

So let’s pick a bit of his story from the bible.

Luke 16:19-22 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,

21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

²⁴ So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

²⁵ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

²⁷ “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,

²⁸ for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

²⁹ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

³⁰ “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

³¹ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’’

Whatever honor or the prestige attached on our being, will not matter anymore when God calls us to rest, so all our professions, educations, wealth, and everything will not count when we face death for it is a decree of God that we must all die once and after that there will be judgment.

Hebrew 9:27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

All deaths can be stopped by God but because of the free will he gave to everyone of us, he just allow you to die if you wish to kill yourself but you are sinning against him for doing it, because he has some other plans for you, that’s why he is supposed to be appointing a time for your rest to be which you made in advance once you commit suicide.

So everything that happens is with permission by God but not all is of his desire for he allowed it to happen because of your free will, so if don’t like to obey then, there are consequences of it during judgment.

So none of us will stay here forever, for we will all live once and will die once.

But the good thing for those who believe in God, he promised to us another life that is to come, as the bible is telling us good news that there is a world to come or the eternal life.

And this is what made Lazarus became inspired, because he knew it all and hereby, he didn’t mind all anxieties in life.

He is once again a beggar full of sores and when dogs are licking it, of course that must very be painful, but there is no record in the bible that he complained.

He lived his whole life as a beggar, he didn’t become a millionaire, and there is no record that his sores got healed to alleviate his sufferings.

He died to his appointed time with all the hardships and misfortune in life.

Lazarus believed in God, Lazarus has faith that’s why when he died he was taken by the angels into Abraham’s bosom.

What does that mean? He will have eternal life. Like the thief in the cross which suffered with our lord Jesus Christ. He said in the verse below.

Luke 23:42-43 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

The lord promised him to be taken to paradise, our life is not ended here, if you are worried about dying, then depression will come but if you are preparing to die, then it will not be very hard for you to accept any misfortune or even deaths from loved ones, for it is God who wills it all, for everyone will die to God’s appointed time.

The living knows that they are going die because it is appointed unto men once to die.

There are people who died at the very young age but there is something we must understand of dying.

The words of God from the bible is saying like this in:

Isaiah 57:1 The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.

If you are a righteous person God will cause your death, you will be taken away but there are people who will not understand God’s will.

God who knows everything is a merciful God and a loving God, he may take your life earlier than others because he can see the evil that is to come that’s why if we are reaching that point in life that we are told that we are going to die very soon let us accept the will of our lord our creator we are not intended by God to live forever on earth he promised a paradise a very beautiful place of tranquility living eternally with our creator and that must be our point of view in life to be saved and to be with God in paradise because our story will not end here on earth if you only think about things on earth you will be disgusted you’ll be suffering from anxiety but God has told us in the book of:

Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The peace of God surpasses all understanding of the physicians, doctors or whoever that popular people that claimed to be the best advisers, they are nothing compared to what God can do.

Sometimes the doctors, surgeon, physicians may contribute your depression because the doctor will say you only will live for 3 months or so, but if you trust in God, the peace of God which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, and then, you will be free from anxiety or to suicidal tendencies.

Dying which is prepared to face your creator, is something like graduating from a university with honors.

You know that you are leaving the university but you are glad that you are leaving with honors because you have finished your course, dying is just like finishing your course if you are a believer of God and Christ.

So that is something we must not fear but something we have to cherish, to die in Christ is to live forever according to the bible.

I know that it’s not easy for everybody to accept but it is in the bible, so we have to accept it that we will all die but we have to wait for God’s appointed time for us.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 All living persons on earth have that premonition that they are going to die but let’s not be governed by fear because we will only die when God wills us to die that our trust because Jesus Christ guaranteed that in:

Matthew 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.

30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Two small birds are sold for a cent, you can just imagine small birds will not die without the will of the father more so a human being which is more important than all birds that exist, human beings like us are very important to GOD, when the Lord Jesus Christ said,

Mark 8:36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?

37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

The whole world is not enough to save your soul, meaning your soul is more important than the whole world according to the bible.

Are we going to die as human being without the will of the father of course not, because even sparrows will not fall to the ground without the will of the father even if you are a sharp shooter and you are trying to shoot a sparrow the sparrow might escape the bullet because it’s not yet the will of God as we had just read it on the bible verses above.

Not one of us will die without the consent of the Father we must not be pre- occupied about death what we should be pre- occupied is if what is coming after death and it will give us peace of mind if we die in faith in our God and in our lord JESUS Christ

The people who lose hope in life are those without faith in God because those who have faith no matter what will happen they will never lose hope, for the hope that is in them is until the end

Hebrews 3:6 But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

If you have Christ in you, your hope is up to the end. The verse said that we are the house of Christ, if Christ is in us you will not lose hope so those who lose hope have no Christ in them, for if you have Christ in you, the Christ is dwelling inside you, if you have the spirit of Christ you will never lose hope because Christ is hope and that hope will be until he comes back.

Titus 2:13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

The blessed of hope should be staying with us until his appearance again

As the verse said that we should wait the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our savior Jesus Christ so those that have Christ in life will not lose hope they continue to do good things up to the last moment of their lives.

1 John 3:3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

So you should not commit suicide for this is not what God wants you to do to your life.

Those who did it are just showing us a sign that they don’t have true God in their lives.

If you have known God you will never commit suicide, because you have the everlasting, and never ending hope which is in Christ Jesus Amen.
